Mareeba's Multicultural Heritage
Few Australian communities of 24,000 people can claim the cultural diversity of Mareeba. The town's multicultural character was forged through successive waves of migration: Chinese merchants and miners during the 1870s gold rush; Italian, Greek, Maltese, Spanish, and Albanian families who established the tobacco industry from the 1920s; and more recent arrivals from across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - the Djungan, Muluridji, Kuku Yalanji, and Djabugay - have maintained continuous connection to country throughout all these changes and are central to the cultural identity of the region. The festival honours all of these communities and their contributions to making Mareeba the vibrant town it is today.
What to Expect
Cultural Performances
Traditional dance, music, and ceremony from Aboriginal, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Filipino, Samoan, Indian, and many other cultural groups. Performances run throughout the day on the main stage.
International Food Court
Dozens of food stalls serving authentic cuisine from around the world. Italian arancini, Greek souvlaki, Chinese dumplings, Filipino adobo, Indian curry, Samoan sapasui, and much more.
Live Music
Local and regional musicians perform throughout the day, spanning genres from traditional folk to contemporary pop. The main stage program runs from morning until evening.
Art & Craft Stalls
Handmade products from local artisans, traditional crafts from various cultures, and community organisation stalls. Great for unique gifts and souvenirs.
Children's Activities
Face painting, jumping castles, games, craft activities, and cultural workshops designed for young children. A dedicated kids' zone keeps families entertained.
Cultural Workshops
Hands-on workshops in traditional skills including weaving, cooking demonstrations, dance lessons, and language tasters. A chance to learn something new.
Food is the Heart of the Festival
The food court is the beating heart of the Multicultural Festival. Community groups from each cultural background prepare their traditional dishes, many using family recipes handed down through generations. It's arguably the best food event on the Atherton Tablelands, with dishes you won't find in any restaurant.
Come hungry and eat your way around the world. Most dishes are priced between $5 and $15, making it affordable to sample from multiple stalls. Vegetarian and dietary options are usually available. Bring cash as not all stalls accept card payments.

A Community Celebration
The Multicultural Festival is organised by the Mareeba Multicultural Festival Inc. with support from Mareeba Shire Council, local businesses, and dozens of volunteer groups. It represents months of preparation by cultural communities who take immense pride in sharing their heritage with the wider community.
The festival has become a powerful symbol of what makes Mareeba unique - a small regional town where people from around the world have come together to build a community. It demonstrates that diversity is Mareeba's greatest strength, and it's one of the most authentic multicultural experiences you'll find anywhere in regional Australia.
