Where Rainforest Meets the Outback

Kuranda - Village in the Rainforest

Nestled in the rainforest canopy above Cairns, Kuranda is one of Far North Queensland's most iconic destinations. Part of Mareeba Shire, this bohemian village blends world-famous markets, wildlife encounters, and ancient rainforest in one unforgettable experience.

Getting to Kuranda

Half the Kuranda experience is the journey. Two world-class transport options make the trip an attraction in itself:

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Glide 7.5 kilometres over the Barron Gorge rainforest canopy from Smithfield to Kuranda. Two mid-stations allow you to walk boardwalks through the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest and view Barron Falls. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes with stops.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

A heritage railway winding through 15 hand-carved tunnels and over 37 bridges from Cairns to Kuranda. The 34-kilometre journey takes approximately 2 hours and passes Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls lookout. One of Australia's most scenic rail journeys.

Many visitors take the Skyrail up and the Scenic Railway down (or vice versa) for the full experience. Kuranda is also accessible by car from Mareeba (30 minutes via the Kennedy Highway) or Cairns (25 minutes via the Kuranda Range Road).

Kuranda Markets

The Kuranda Markets are world-famous and have been drawing visitors since the 1970s when the village became a haven for artists and alternative lifestyles. Today, two main markets operate in the village:

Original Rainforest Markets

Open 7 days a week, 9:30am to 3:30pm. Located in the heart of the village among tropical gardens. Local artisans sell handmade jewelry, clothing, leather goods, woodwork, and tropical produce. Live music and buskers add to the atmosphere.

Heritage Markets

Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 3:30pm. Adjacent to Centenary Park. Features opals, Australian souvenirs, art, macadamia nuts, tropical fruit juices, portrait artists, and fortune readers. A vibrant mix of local crafts and unique finds.

Wildlife Experiences

Kuranda is home to several world-class wildlife attractions, all within walking distance of the village centre:

Kuranda Koala Gardens

Cuddle a koala, meet wombats, freshwater crocodiles, lizards, and snakes in a tropical garden setting.

Birdworld Kuranda

Australia's largest free-flight aviary with over 500 birds from 60 species in a natural rainforest enclosure.

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary

Australia's largest butterfly flight aviary. Walk among thousands of tropical butterflies including the electric-blue Ulysses.

Rainforest Walks

Kuranda sits within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, one of the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforests on Earth. Several walks are accessible from the village:

  • Jumrum Creek Walk - An easy 800m loop through lowland rainforest starting from the village. Excellent for spotting Ulysses butterflies and Boyd's forest dragons.
  • Barron Falls Lookout Walk - A short walk from the Barron Falls station (Skyrail) to a spectacular lookout over the falls, especially impressive during the wet season.
  • Jungle Walk - A boardwalk through the rainforest canopy near the Kuranda Railway Station.
  • River Walk - Follow the Barron River through open forest and vine thickets along a sealed path from the village centre.

Arts & Culture

Kuranda has been a magnet for artists since the 1970s counterculture movement. The village is home to independent galleries, the Kuranda Arts Co-operative (artist-run since 1993), glass-blowing studios, didgeridoo workshops, and Aboriginal art galleries. Street performers and live musicians are a daily feature.

Food & Drink

The village offers a diverse range of dining options from tropical smoothies and fresh fruit to German sausages, Japanese cuisine, and barista-made Australian coffee. Frog's Restaurant offers fine dining with rainforest views. The markets themselves are full of food stalls serving international cuisine and local tropical produce.

Practical Information

Kuranda is located 25 kilometres northwest of Cairns and 30 kilometres east of Mareeba. The village is part of Mareeba Shire. Most visitors spend 3-4 hours exploring the markets and attractions. Combining Skyrail one way and Scenic Railway the other way makes a full day.

The village is compact and walkable. Free parking is available at several locations. Public toilets and ATMs are available. The Kuranda Visitor Information Centre is located in Centenary Park. Peak season is the dry season (April to November) when tour buses bring hundreds of visitors daily. For a quieter experience, visit on a weekday morning.
