History

The Mareeba Saleyards held its first cattle sale on May 19, 1948, marking the beginning of what would become one of the most important livestock markets in North Queensland. The saleyards were established to serve the growing beef cattle industry across the Atherton Tablelands, Cape York Peninsula, and the Gulf Savannah regions.

In 2018, the saleyards celebrated its 70th anniversary with a special commemorative sale. Over the decades, the facility has been progressively upgraded with modern yards, improved animal welfare facilities, and electronic weighing systems, while maintaining its character as a traditional livestock auction.

The saleyards are now operated by North Queensland Livestock Saleyards and continue to serve as a critical piece of infrastructure for the regional beef industry. Cattle are trucked in from properties across a vast area spanning from the Tablelands through to the Gulf country and Cape York.

Sale Days & How It Works

Regular cattle sales are held every Tuesday, with cattle arriving from Monday afternoon (7pm Monday curfew for cattle delivery). The auction typically begins at 8:00am and can run for several hours depending on the number of cattle yarded. Special sales with larger numbers may be scheduled for additional days.

Sale Day Schedule

  • Monday 7pm: Cattle delivery curfew - all cattle must be yarded by this time
  • Tuesday 8am: Auction begins - auctioneers work through pens in order
  • Tuesday afternoon: Purchased cattle loaded for transport to new properties or feedlots

Economic Importance

The Mareeba Saleyards is a critical piece of agricultural infrastructure for the entire Far North Queensland region. The beef cattle industry contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the regional economy, and the saleyards serves as the primary price-discovery mechanism for cattle across a vast geographical area.

Record-breaking sales have become increasingly common as cattle prices have strengthened. Individual sale days have exceeded $2.5 million, with average prices per head regularly above $1,000. The saleyards supports a network of livestock agents, transport companies, veterinary services, and associated businesses that depend on the weekly sales cycle.

Visiting the Saleyards

The Mareeba Saleyards is a working facility and visitors are welcome to observe sale days from designated viewing areas. Watching a live cattle auction is a unique and authentically Australian experience - the rapid-fire auctioneer calls, the experienced buyers and sellers, and the atmosphere of a working livestock market is something you won't find in a tourist brochure.
